Eight people get together in the evening, and Richard can't answer what Ilana is going to do next. He says that everyone is dead and has never been to the island. This is hell. He said maybe they should stop listening to Jacob and listen to others. He went into the jungle with a torch. Ilana wants him. Jack says there's no need. Ben and Sun tell Jack that Richard has gone to John. Hurley talks to someone in non-english, but doesn't tell Jack. Ben told Ilana that maybe Jack was right. Richard dug up the cross, and Hurley found him, saying that Isabella had called him, and asked Richard why he had buried the cross. He was standing next to her husband, and Hurley helped deliver the message that her death was not his fault, but that no matter how hard he tried, it would not change the outcome, and that we were together. After she left, Hurley said Isabella asked him to stop the men in black from leaving the island or everyone would go to hell.
Ilana: in bed, she promised Jacob to protect six people, and then seemed to recover from Jacob. He told her that after taking six people to the temple, Richard would tell her what to do next.
Richard: in the Tenerife, Canary Islands, in 1867, Richard's wife, Isabella, was seriously ill and couldn't afford a doctor. She took down the cross she was wearing. The doctor did not want to rush half an hour to cure the disease in the heavy rain, but only wanted to prescribe expensive medicine, and said the cross was not valuable. Richard, in a hurry, killed him by the wrong hand, and then returned with the medicine. In prison he read the English bible, the priest asked him when he said that he taught himself English, originally intended to go to the new world with his wife. He repented, but the priest said that time was not enough and that he would be hanged tomorrow. But then Whitfield bought the English speaker for captain Magnus Hanso from the priest. They set out on the BLACK ROCK, the rain hit the statue of god on the island at night, and ran aground in the jungle, leaving only five crew members. Whitfield said there was not enough food and water. Richard could not break free from the shackles, saw the boar coming down and back to Isabella, she said they were in hell, so they could meet, she wanted to save him before the devil (namely black smoke) came back, but before black smoke appeared, he wanted her to escape, but she was killed by black smoke. Then the man in black appeared, gave him water to drink, and unshackled him, asking him to obey his orders.The man in black told him that he was black smoke, but that she was taken by the devil, and that he would kill the devil if he wanted to see her, and that he only had one chance to stab the devil into his chest and not wait for him to speak (the scene is the same as Dogen said to Sayid, and the same knife). But Richard was knocked down by Jacob and proved that he was not dead. Jacob USES the bottle as a metaphor, saying it contains sinister evil and so on, and the island is the bottle stopper, blocking them up. Jacob learns that he has seen the man in black, and tells him that the man in black believes in the inherent evil of human nature and believes that everyone can fall, while he is the opposite. Therefore, he has to bring people to the island to prove the other side is wrong, and that their past is not important after people arrive on the island. Richard said if he didn't intervene, the men in black would intervene if they only saved themselves. So Jacob wanted Richard to help the medium. Richard wanted to repay him, Jacob could not bring his wife back or forgive his SINS to save him from hell, but could make him immortal. Richard finds the man in black and gives him a white stone. The man in black said that if he decided not to follow Jacob, he could always find himself and return his cross to his wife. Richard buried it.
Jacob: he asked the man in black why he wanted to kill himself. The man in black said he wanted to leave the island. Men in black said they would kill him, including his successor. When Jacob left, he broke the bottle.
