When Sayid said that Locke had a gun, he gave it to Sayid and said he was the one who knocked out Sayid at the time of the launch, because he didn't want everyone to be taken to the cell tower that killed everyone. He was arrested because his college roommate, Essam Tazia, was a member of a terrorist group and used Nadia's whereabouts to lure him to Sydney. He was reunited with Essam in Sydney, where he said his girlfriend Zara had been hit by a missile. Sayid went to Essam's house. There were others inside. At home he found a bug, asked what they were really doing and told the truth. While playing football, Sayid learns from Essam that Haddad is about to give up her life, but she doesn't want to. Sayid tells Melissa that Essam wants to quit. She says she will not know where the bomb is until the operation begins. The two men must Sayid persuade Essam to be a human bomb or arrest Nadia. Sayid convinced Essam.On the day of the operation, Sayid told him he worked for the CIA and gave him time to escape. Essam was furious that he used himself for Nadia and pointed a gun at Sayid, which ended in his suicide. Sayid gets a plane ticket to California two hours later to find Nadia, and Robert refuses to allow Essam to hold a Muslim burial.
