In 1841 Solomon Northrop was a carpenter and violinist living with his wife and children in Saratoga Springs, New York. Two white men (later) fooled Solomon into Washington for sale on the grounds of giving him a chance to accompany the circus performance. Solomon was renamed Pratt, a slave fleeing from Georgia. He was sold to Mr. Ford, Plantation Landlord, by Tefilus Freeman (). Solomon got along well with Mr. Ford. The transport canal he built worked efficiently, and Mr. Ford sent him a violin for recognition. But this provoked the resentment of the carpenter John Tillitz, and started to look down on him. Titus collaborates with friends to lynch on Solomon, and he is rescued by Mr Ford. Mr. Ford said he had to sell Solomon to Edmund Epps if he wanted to survive. He wanted to tell Mr. Ford he was not a slave, but Mr. Ford said, "I can not hear you that," "he has a debt to pay," and can not help but himself. Epps believes that the abuse of slaves was permitted by the Bible and advised them to accept the so-called fate. He demanded that every slave take 200 pounds of cotton a day, otherwise he will be beaten. Pa TeQian () can pick more than 500 pounds of cotton a day, Epps often praised her, she has been malicious. Mrs. Ephus (very jealous, in public, Mr. Epps made it clear that if he threatened him to choose Pa TeQian instead of his wife, she would violently abuse Pa TeQian whenever she had the chance. Pa TeQian, who was raped many times by Mr. Epps and sought help from Solomon, refused to do so. Epps considered the new slave brought cotton worms and he rented the slaves to neighboring sugar plantations. The owner of the sugar plantation liked Solomon very much, allowing him to play the violin at the wedding anniversary, as well as rewards for work. Upon returning to Epps Manor, he would like to use the money to send two whites to send a letter to his friend in New York State, who ostensibly agreed to his request and received the money, but on the contrary, he was summoned. Solomon reluctantly convinced Epps, and in the end he could only quietly burn the letter, his only hope. One day, Ephes was furious because Pa TeQian could not be found everywhere. When she returned, Ephes ordered her to tie her up and force Solomon to whip Pa TeQian. Solomon could not but obey him, but he could not continue. Ai Pus took the whip to continue until Pa TeQian was flushed. Pa TeQian gradually recovered, Solomon and Canadian carpenter Ba Si () to build the terrace. Ba Si opposed slavery, Solomon trusted him and asked for help, hoping he could send a letter to Saratoga Springs. Initially, Ba Si did not agree to be threatening his own life this time, but he kindly agreed with Solomon's request. The Governor of New York and another came to Solomon's estate and named him Solomon. The governor inquired about some of Solomon's problems with his former state in New York. Solomon recognized that the governor's companion was a Saratoga The owner, this person is to liberate him.Pa TeQian was surprised even though Ephes still did not believe it and Solomon gave Pa TeQian a final hug before leaving. After 12 years as slave, Solomon regained freedom to return to his home.
